Who are we?

The Irish Association of Psychodynamic Psychotherapists (IAPP) was founded to provide a dedicated space for therapists, students, and professionals with an interest in psychodynamic psychotherapy. At its core, IAPP is a community-focused organisation that seeks to strengthen the field of psychodynamic therapy by fostering collaboration, offering education, and creating opportunities for professional growth.

Our mission is to promote and support psychodynamic psychotherapy as a vital and transformative approach to understanding the human mind. Rooted in the works of influential thinkers like Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Melanie Klein, and Donald Winnicott, psychodynamic therapy emphasises the importance of exploring unconscious processes, early life experiences, and relational dynamics. At IAPP, we aim to preserve and advance these principles, while making psychodynamic theory accessible and relevant in today’s world.

What we aim to do

  1. Build a Supportive Community
We believe in the power of connection. IAPP provides a space for psychodynamic therapists, students, and those with an interest in the field to come together. Whether it’s sharing insights, exchanging ideas, or collaborating on projects, we strive to foster a sense of belonging and mutual support.

  2. Promote Education and Growth
One of our primary goals is to ensure that psychodynamic theory and practice remain vibrant and evolving. Through workshops, educational videos, and courses, we aim to equip members with the tools and knowledge to deepen their understanding and refine their practice. From foundational theories to contemporary applications, our resources are designed to support lifelong learning.

  3. Demystify Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is often seen as complex or inaccessible. At IAPP, we are committed to breaking down these barriers. By exploring the works of key figures and addressing myths and misconceptions, we seek to make psychodynamic principles understandable and practical for therapists and clients alike.

  4. Advocate for the Field
Psychodynamic therapy has a rich history, but it also has a vital role to play in addressing modern mental health challenges. IAPP is dedicated to advocating for the relevance of psychodynamic approaches in today’s world. We aim to highlight its enduring value and ensure it remains a respected and recognised modality.

  5. Encourage Inclusivity and Accessibility
At IAPP, we recognise that the field of psychodynamic therapy is continually enriched by diverse perspectives and experiences. We are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming space where therapists and students from all backgrounds feel valued and supported.

By joining IAPP, you become part of a growing community that is passionate about advancing psychodynamic psychotherapy. Together, we can deepen our understanding, strengthen our practices, and contribute to the ongoing development of this profound therapeutic approach.
